Inset cabinetry refers to faceframe cabinets with the door set inside the faceframe to be flush with the front of the cabinet instead of having the door on top of the faceframe or cabinet box, as is typical for other types of cabinets. This is acheived with special hinges either hidden or decorative, and by maticulously fitting the door inside the frame opening. Fitting the door in the opening properly is of utmost importance to keep the doors from sticking or having too much space in the openings.

Because of the critical nature of Inset cabinet construction, it is not typically manufactured by lower priced manufacturers or cabinet importers. Inset cabinetry should only be installed by a qualified cabinet installer. It's very crucial that the cabinets be installed perfectly level. If the cabinets are hung crooked or out of square it can keep the doors from closing properly, or cause larger gaps than you might like between the door and face frame of the cabinets. When choosing and installer, don't just ask how much experience they have. Find out how many times they've installed inset cabinetry and how they feel about it. If they hate inset cabinets, chances are they aren't going to do a very good job of installing them and won't be able to overcome and adjustment or other issues they might run into. The installers should be experienced and comfortable with the product, and not bat an eye when asked about installing them.
